Dear all,

This Thursday at journal club we will discuss an article from this week's New Yorker: Darwin's surprise. Why are evolutionary biologists bringing back extinct deadly viruses? by Michael Spencer (The New Yorker, December 3, 2007 p.64). A scanned version of the file can be found on our website: http://virus.chem.ucla.edu/easyfile/index.php?folder=11 . You need to log in to access the file. If you don't have an account please send me an email and I will email you the file.

Best,

Peter

Brownbag #66 (10/18, Thur, 3:30pm, YH3047)

Dear all,

This Thursday at the next journal club meeting we will discuss the following paper: "The 6-kiloDalton membrane protein of semliki forest virus is involved in the budding process" by Loewy et al, Journal of Virology 69 (1995) p 469-475. The link to the paper is: http://jvi.asm.org/cgi/reprint/69/1/469 . Note that I have spelled semliki correct this time (see Brownbag #65). It is not semlike which would imply that it would look like or behave as a Scanning Electron Microscope which it doesn't, I guess. Apparently semliki refers to a region on the border between The Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

Journal club will start on Thursday, October 18th at 3:30 pm in Bill's office.

Best,

Peter

Dear all, In our next journal club, Thursday 09/27/07, let's discuss a paper about Semliki Forest Virus budding, which is relevant to my work on Sindbis. The title of the paper is: "Semliki Forest Virus Budding: Assay, Mechanisms, and Cholesterol Requirement" by Yanping E. Lu and Margaret Kielian. Here is the link to the paper: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=112299 We'll meet at Bill's office as usual. See you tomorrow, Odisse

with influenza envelope proteins: "Use of a dialyzable short-chain
phospholipid for efficient solubilization and reconstitution of
influenza virus envelopes" by J. de Jonge et al, Biochimica et
Biophysica Acta 1758 (2006) 527-536.
